Statement of Position on Education

Education is the cornerstone of progress and the key to unlocking the potential of every Nevadan. As a U.S. Senate candidate for Nevada, I am committed to ensuring that our state's education system is inclusive, accessible, and effective. Our statement of position seeks to address the educational disparities faced by at-risk urban schools by providing additional resources, support, and opportunities for improvement. This statement aims to bridge the achievement gap and create an equitable learning environment for students attending schools in urban areas through increased funding, enhanced support services, improved curriculum offerings, community partnerships, and accountability measures.

 

Quality Education for All

Increased Funding:

  • Allocate additional federal funding specifically designated for at-risk urban schools based on factors such as student population, socioeconomic status, and academic performance.

  • Ensure that funding is distributed equitably to support targeted interventions and initiatives.

  • Supporting teacher professional development to foster excellence in our educators.

  • Expanding access to affordable pre-K programs to prepare children for success in school.

  • Encouraging innovative and engaging teaching methods and curricula.

  • Provide funding for targeted professional development programs to enhance the skills and knowledge of teachers and school staff in addressing the unique challenges faced by at-risk urban schools.

  • Support ongoing training in culturally responsive teaching, trauma-informed practices, and strategies for supporting diverse student populations.

 

Enriched Curriculum Offerings:

  • Expand access to a comprehensive and enriched curriculum that includes STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), vocational training, and career exploration programs.

 

College and Career Readiness

We believe in preparing Nevada's students for success in both higher education and the workforce. Our goals include:

  • Expanding access to affordable higher education, including trade schools and community colleges.

  • Reducing student loan debt through federal reform and increased support for student financial aid.

  • Supporting apprenticeship and vocational training programs to provide pathways to well-paying jobs.

  • Promoting STEM education to meet the demands of a changing job market.

 

Safe and Inclusive Schools

Every student deserves to learn in a safe and welcoming environment. We are dedicated to:

  • Promoting anti-bullying initiatives and comprehensive mental health services.

  • Ensuring that schools are free from discrimination, including on the basis of race, gender, or sexual orientation.

  • Strengthening school security measures to protect students from harm.

  • Fostering a culture of respect and tolerance.

 

Wraparound Services:

  • Establish comprehensive wraparound services that address the diverse needs of students in at-risk urban schools.

  • Provide resources for mental health counseling, social work support, and academic intervention programs.

 

Education Technology and Access

We recognize the importance of technology in modern education. We aim to:

 

Technology and Infrastructure Upgrades:

  • Provide grants to urban schools to upgrade technology infrastructure and ensure access to modern educational tools.

  • Support the installation of high-speed internet connections, provide devices for students, and improve computer labs and classroom technology.

  • Expand access to broadband and technology in underserved communities.

  • Support teachers and students with the resources necessary for digital learning.

  • Promote digital literacy and the responsible use of technology.

 

Special Education and Inclusive Education

We believe in an inclusive education system that supports all students. Our efforts will include:

  • Increasing funding for special education programs to meet the diverse needs of students.

  • Enhancing support for students with disabilities to help them succeed in mainstream classrooms.

  • Promoting inclusion and reducing the stigma associated with special education.

 

Early Intervention Programs:

  • Implement early literacy and numeracy intervention programs to ensure that students are equipped with essential skills from the beginning of their education.

  • Support early childhood education initiatives to foster school readiness and reduce achievement gaps.

 

Parental and Community Engagement

We understand that education is a collective effort. Our approach will involve:

  • Encouraging parental involvement in schools and decision-making processes.

  • Fostering partnerships between schools, communities, and local businesses.

  • Empowering local school boards to address the unique needs of their communities.

  • Promote partnerships between schools, parents, and community organizations to foster a supportive and engaged learning environment.

  • Allocate funds for parent education programs, workshops, and activities that enhance parental involvement in their children's education.

 

Business and Corporate Sponsorships:

  • Encourage partnerships between urban schools and local businesses and corporations to provide additional resources and support.

  • Facilitate mentorship programs, internships, and job placement opportunities for students, creating meaningful connections between education and the workforce.

 

Higher Education Collaborations:

  • Establish collaborations between urban schools and nearby colleges and universities to offer tutoring programs, college preparation courses, and mentoring opportunities for at-risk students.

  • Provide resources for college counselors and advisors to support students' college and career aspirations.

 

Oversight and Accountability

We will work to ensure that taxpayer dollars are used effectively and that our education system is held accountable for results. This will entail:

  • Implementing rigorous accountability measures at all levels of the education system.

  • Promoting transparency in education funding.

  • Encouraging evidence-based policymaking in education.

 

Data Collection and Reporting:

  • Develop a comprehensive data collection system to track the progress and outcomes of at-risk urban schools, including academic performance, graduation rates, and post-secondary success.

  • Regularly publish transparent reports to help identify areas for improvement and inform policy decisions.

School Improvement Plans:

  • Require at-risk urban schools to establish and implement targeted improvement plans based on data analysis and input from the school community.

  • Support schools in accessing technical assistance and expertise to create effective strategies for academic success.

 

Bilingual and Multilingual Education

Nevada's diversity is its strength. Our commitment is to:

  • Support bilingual and multilingual education programs that reflect the state's cultural and linguistic diversity.

  • Ensure that English learners receive the necessary support to succeed academically.

Funding Allocation:

  • Allocate federal funding specifically designated for the implementation and ongoing operations of the Urban Schools Resource and Support Expansion Act.

  • Coordinate with state and local governments to leverage additional resources and maximize impact.

 

Grant Programs:

  • Establish grant programs to provide financial assistance and incentives to at-risk urban schools that demonstrate progress and innovation in improving student outcomes.

  • Encourage collaboration among urban school districts to share best practices and promote collective learning.
